Sherlock Holmes never smoked a calabash pipe in Arthur Conan Doyle’s original stories. But in 1899, American stage actor William Gillette chose a natural gourd calabash for his portrayal of Holmes — because its large curved bowl could be seen from the back rows of the theatre, and its hands-free balance let him gesticulate freely on stage. The image stuck. For over a century, the bent gourd calabash with a white meerschaum bowl has been inseparable from the world’s greatest detective.
